Shared Journey
Descent into Sanctuary
(River Falls, WI, June 2009)
This is part of a 89-step descent to a path by the Kinnickinnic River. During the years I spent in River Falls, this trail was my sanctuary. I came here for healing, spiritual connection, and creative inspiration. Every time I made this descent, I always came up felling better, more whole, more at peace.
These are magical woods. Eventually, over time, the path was landmarked for me by intense spiritual experiences. The land became a map of my growth journey. Whenever I’d discover a new part of myself, I’d discover a new magical spot or even a hidden new trail. These woods were my home, my temple, myself. Leaving them was more painful than I can describe, but it was time to move on. Once I graduated from college, Wisconsin was not the place for me. Also, I had learned these woods so completely that although I loved them, I felt like I was ready to grow into new territories.
I never really liked Illinois. I made some great friends, but I ached for my woods. I searched, but never found any magical woods in Illinois. Nothing that touched me so deeply. My soul felt continuously dry for those 4 years. The only times I felt like myself were when I visited Diana’s Grove in Missouri.
This picture was taken in June, during my pre-NC roadtrip journey with Joy. We visited the trail a couple times while in the area. I loved introducing her to my old sacred home. It was very healing for me to visit there as part of my trip. I was poised for two months betwee my life in Illinois and my life in North Carolina. I could thank the woods for all they had previously done for me, acknowledge how hard Illinois had been, and smile into my future life. This transition point rocked my soul!
Since moving to NC, life has been chaotic and sometimes difficult. Joy has been great, but in many ways, my external life has been tumultuous. It doesn’t matter, though, because I’m here!
There are lots and lots and lots of amazing woods and trails here!! I’ve only had a chance to visit a few, but already I have found one trail of magical woods. There are bound to be many more, as these are magical mountains and there are thousands of trails! I have a lifetime of exploration ahead!
